Hidden amidst the fast-growing urban landscape of North Bengaluru, Devanahalli Fort stands as a quiet reminder of Karnataka’s rich military and architectural heritage. Located close to Kempegowda International Airport, this centuries-old fort is best known as the birthplace of Tipu Sultan and remains one of the most historically significant forts around Bengaluru.

With massive stone walls, bastions, ancient gateways, and temples enclosed within its boundaries, Devanahalli Fort reflects the layered history of the Vijayanagara Empire, Mysore Kingdom, and colonial India.

About Devanahalli Fort
Devanahalli Fort is a fortified settlement situated in Devanahalli town, approximately 35 km from Bengaluru city. Originally built as a mud fort in the early 1500s, it was later reconstructed in stone during the rule of Hyder Ali in the 18th century.

Today, the fort continues to attract history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, photographers, and travelers looking to explore heritage spaces beyond Bengaluru’s urban attractions.

History of Devanahalli Fort
The history of Devanahalli Fort dates back to 1501 when Malla Byre Gowda, a local chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire, constructed the original mud fort.

Later, during the rise of the Mysore Kingdom, Hyder Ali rebuilt the fort using stone masonry, strengthening its military capabilities. The fort eventually became associated with Tipu Sultan, who was born in Devanahalli in 1751.

During the Third Anglo-Mysore War in 1791, British forces under Lord Cornwallis captured the fort from Tipu Sultan. Despite political changes over the centuries, much of the fort structure has survived remarkably well.
