Seeing Stars: Daan Roosegaarde and UNESCO switch off the city lights to see the stars as heritage

Seeing the stars in your own street. It may sound like a fairytale, but the Dutch city of Franeker is achieving this by switching off its lights in the project Seeing Stars. By doing so, Daan Roosegaarde and Unesco Netherlands bring the stars back to create a sense of connection between people, something we are still missing in this COVID-19 pandemic. Seeing Stars encourages cities worldwide to follow; Unesco Netherlands aims to recognise seeing stars as a form of universal heritage.

More than 80% of the world’s population lives under light-polluted skies; a barrier preventing us from experiencing the beauty of the universe. But there is a solution. “Everybody should have the right to see the stars through an unpolluted night sky. Looking at the stars makes you feel connected to each other, we are all part of the immense cosmos. This is the communal and universal heritage I strive for. The movie premiere launches today at https://studioroosegaarde.net/project/seeing-stars. The Seeing Stars movie creates a sense of connection, not only with our community, but also with our planet.

Seeing Stars is a collaboration between the residents, government, and businesses of Franeker, Unesco Netherlands and Studio Roosegaarde to switch off all non-essential household lights, billboards, and street lights. By removing this light pollution on a city-wide scale, Seeing Stars enables everyone to reconnect with the universe and experience the magic of starlight again. Public safety is ensured in close collaboration with the local government. Seeing Stars begins in Franeker and aims to travel to cities such as Leiden, Sydney, Venice, Stockholm, and Reykjavik.

Unesco, Nacht van het Wad, Earth Hour, Nacht van de Nacht, and the International Dark-Sky Association have all previously advocated moments of darkness to increase human and animal well-being. Seeing Stars is part of this movement and acts as a radical premiere which is focussed on viewing the stars in your city. It contributes to the sustainable development goals of the United Nations and reflects the rich astronomical history of the city of Franeker.

The first Seeing Stars project was realized and recorded in Franeker, the Netherlands, to encourage other cities to follow. Daan Roosegaarde en UNESCO schakelen de lichten uit in deze stad om de sterren te zien als erfgoed

De sterren bewonderen in jouw eigen straat. Het klinkt misschien als een sprookje, maar de Friese stad Franeker maakt dit mogelijk door de lichten uit te schakelen in het project Seeing Stars. Op deze manier brengen Daan Roosegaarde en Unesco Nederland de sterren terug om een diepere verbinding te laten voelen met elkaar, iets wat we missen tijdens deze pandemie. Seeing Stars is een oproep aan steden over de hele wereld; Unesco Nederland streeft ernaar om het ervaren van de sterren als een vorm van universeel erfgoed te erkennen.

Meer dan 80% van de wereldbevolking leeft onder een licht vervuilde hemel waardoor de schoonheid van het universum niet kan worden gezien. Maar er is een oplossing. “Iedereen zou het recht moeten hebben om de sterren te zien. Sterren kijken maakt dat je je verbonden kunt voelen met de immense kosmos, maar ook met elkaar. Het is een vorm van gemeenschappelijk en universeel erfgoed waar ik me graag voor inzet. De filmpremière van Seeing Stars is vandaag op https://studioroosegaarde.net/project/seeing-stars om een gevoel te creëren van verbondenheid met de planeet en gemeenschap.

Seeing Stars is een samenwerking met de inwoners, gemeente en bedrijven van Franeker, Unesco Nederland en Studio Roosegaarde om alle niet-essentiële verlichting, reclameborden en straatverlichting uit te zetten. Door het weghalen van deze lichtvervuiling op stedelijke schaal kan iedereen de grootsheid van de kosmos en het licht van de sterren opnieuw ervaren. De openbare veiligheid wordt gewaarborgd door de samenwerking met lokale overheid. Seeing Stars start in Franeker en kan doorreizen naar steden zoals Leiden, Sydney, Venetië, Stockholm en Reykjavik.

UNESCO, Nacht van het Wad, Earth Hour en de International Dark-Sky Association hebben al eerder gepleit voor momenten van duisternis om het welzijn van mens en dier te vergroten. Seeing Stars is onderdeel van deze beweging met een radicale première die bijdraagt aan de duurzame ontwikkelingsdoeleinden van de Verenigde Naties. Het weerspiegelt ook de astronomische geschiedenis van Franeker door de sterren, zoals in de donkerte van het Waddengebied, terug te brengen naar de stad.

De eerste Seeing Stars is gerealiseerd en opgenomen in Franeker, Friesland met als doel dat andere steden volgen.
