The work is colloquially known as\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53860\">Nevelson Chapel<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53861\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53963\">Objects Conservation Studio\u2019s Sarah Nunberg and students from Pratt Institute are treating overpainted wood surfaces with an innovative cleaning system developed in Florence,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53965\">revealing Nevelson\u2019s original paint for the first time in decades. The project recently received two remarkable gifts. A $250,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation is enabling initial art conservation. The National Endowment for the Humanities\u2019 Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections grant program is providing $350,000 for an environmental management system. Other foundation and leadership donors will be announced Fall 2018.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53981\">\n<div id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yqtfd98422\" class=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yqt1558119117\">\n<div id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_89629\" dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yqtfd02140\" class=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yqt1558119117\">\n<p><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53872\">Commissioned by Saint Peter\u2019s Church for midtown Manhattan\u2019s ground-breaking corporate \/ church \/ public complex formerly called Citigroup Center (completed, 1977; landmarked, 2017),\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53873\"><strong>Nevelson Chapel<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53874\">remains key public space in a neighborhood where Privately-Owned Public Spaces (POPS) have been allowed by the City to evolve into retail\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53875\">or office space since their original designations. In this way, the Church\u2019s commitment decades ago to invest in the City as it neared bankruptcy in the 1970s finds fresh\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53876\">expression today in protecting\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53877\"><strong>Nevelson Chapel<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53878\">as it becomes one of fewer and fewer spaces attending to, as Rabbi Joshua Heschel put it, \u201cbeing human amid skyscrapers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53879\"><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53880\">Born in Ukraine in 1899, Nevelson\u2019s family fled pogroms there and eventually settled as\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53881\">immigrants in Rockland, Maine. Much in the spirit of her own life story as a discard of Europe, Nevelson collected broken furniture, toilet seats, baseball bats and other objects\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53882\">\u2014 what her dealer, Pace Gallery\u2019s Arne Glimcher, called \u201cthe detritus of society\u201d \u2014<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53884\">\u00a0from the streets of New York and assembled them as comprehensive sculptural installations intended to be grand and mysterious: \u201cMoon Garden,\u201d \u201cPalace,\u201d \u201cFeast,\u201d \u201cChapel.\u201d\u00a0<br clear=\"none\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53911\"><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53884\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53885\"><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53886\">Nevelson was, herself, grand and mysterious \u2014 her storied persona, termed \u201cthe Nevelson,\u201d replete with three sets of fake eyelashes, floor length fur coat and bold jewelry. She was one of the first recipients of the National Medal of the Arts, bestowed on her in 1985 by\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53887\">President Ronald Reagan to honor her creative genius and her personal achievement.\u00a0<br clear=\"none\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53919\"><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53887\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53888\"><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53889\"><strong>Nevelson Chapel<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_4155365707280973225yiv8626951819yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534263622651_53890\">is the artist\u2019s only remaining complete environment always open to the public.
