Specifically, AIA is launching a bipartisan effort on Capitol Hill focusing on two main goals: 1.) making architectural and design services for schools an allowable use of funds within existing federal funding and grants; and 2.) Establishing a federal clearinghouse of resources on school design best practices for school officials, architects and other design professionals to keep them informed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archidust.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-243\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archidust.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Brotman_Svigals_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.archidust.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Brotman_Svigals_01.jpg 376w, https:\/\/www.archidust.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Brotman_Svigals_01-300x296.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 376px) 100vw, 376px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his testimony, Brotman\u2014partner at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.svigals.com\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.svigals.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1534651742731000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH15RGk5owf0pDi3r6bbOgyc3-hhw\">Svigals + Partners<\/a>\u2014detailed best practices that were incorporated into the new Sandy Hook Elementary School. Most notably, Brotman explained that schools cannot be designed with a one-size-fits-all approach or utilizing a specific security prescription as they need to be developed around input from the community and designed to address the specific needs of the students and teachers.<\/p><div id=\"archi-4065352689\" class=\"archi-horizontal-in-content archi-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Horizontal responsive -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1313562808736279\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"4811561488\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhether it\u2019s a retrofit or new school, each school must be designed for its unique student population, for its unique location, and to meet the needs of its unique community,\u201d said Brotman before the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/school-safety\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/school-safety&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1534651742731000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGJuFPJAC9aP1mZfZub6rddJSNuWw\">Federal Commission on School Safety<\/a>. \u201cThe primary goal is to provide an inspiring, healthy environment that promotes learning. Security features, while vital and necessary, should be as invisible as possible and incorporated into the school\u2019s design. Failing to do so puts children\u2019s education, emotional development and pro-social behavior at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Federal Commission on School Safety Listening Session - Wyoming\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rBXEsBiFDq8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brotman detailed features of the new Sandy Hook Elementary School that create an open and welcoming design concept, which maximizes daylight and provides a layered approach to security\u2014both natural and technological\u2014seamlessly incorporated into the design.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a rain garden with a sunken rock &#8216;river,&#8217; along the entire front of the school\u2013creating a moat of sorts, that is clearly not friendly to cars or people. The design then has three small footbridges to cross the rain garden to enter the school, which also controls entry,\u201d said Brotman. \u201cThe children are unaware about the security benefits provided by the rain garden\u2014and they don\u2019t need to know. This small but impactful example shows the value of taking a comprehensive, design\u2014centered approach to school security. It is a highly specific answer to multiple physical and emotional considerations at once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to Brotman, other AIA member architects\u2014with an expertise in the design of safer schools\u2014are also taking part in the national dialogue on school safety.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On\u00a0<span data-term=\"goog_1630951924\">Oct. 19<\/span>, the Institute\u2019s CAE is holding a national multidisciplinary symposium: \u201cThe Design of Safe, Secure &amp; Welcoming Learning Environments,\u201d at the AIA national headquarters in Washington. The symposium will bring together a wide variety of perspectives from stakeholders that include law enforcement, educators, mental health advocates, and security consultants, as well as architects and other design professionals. Together, they will share in a dialogue about the development of safe, secure and welcoming schools, which may inform the resources included in a federal clearinghouse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Aug. 7, architect Stuart Coppedge, FAIA, Principal of RTA Architects, presented to the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s Federal Commission on School Safety during its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rBXEsBiFDq8\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v%3DrBXEsBiFDq8&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1534651742731000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGmiHc6VC3N096liKwPYHseW4O78w\">listening session in Cheyenne, Wyoming<\/a>. Coppedge provided the commission with insights into the collaborative design and community evaluation processes architects employ to create great educational environments with enhanced safety.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Aug. 1, two leading members of the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE), Karina Ruiz, AIA, Principal of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bric-arch.com\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/bric-arch.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1534651742731000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH7X1LLpu5hwLEhC9k9Et9_eROjgQ\">BRIC Architecture Inc.<\/a>\u00a0and Brian Minnich, AIA, of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwwoinc.com\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.gwwoinc.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1534651742731000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE7FTfwR3Nwh1P1OW6JAqzKkGQbDw\">GWWO<\/a>\u00a0provided recommendations for designing safer schools to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May, the AIA announced the appointment of architect and former AIA President Jeff Potter, FAIA, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.org\/press-releases\/197541-architect-jeff-potter-faia-appointed-to-tex\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.aia.org\/press-releases\/197541-architect-jeff-potter-faia-appointed-to-tex&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1534651742731000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE_dKKU4hUaquDXUhKZ3qjH03XRYg\">Texas Governor Greg Abbott\u2019s roundtable<\/a>, which is intended to identify enhanced safety and security strategies for the state\u2019s schools and communities.
